Originally designed for athletes looking for peak performance in the early 70s, the adidas SL 72 continues to play a central role in the German sportswear brand’s archival history. Despite the silhouette’s 2019 resurgence the original 1972 color blocking, the adidas SL 72 now appears in a slightly more elevated construction with a Brazil-reminiscent counterpart.
The first member of the brand’s Super Light constructions, the low top trim mirrors the use of a lightweight nylon base layer with rich suede panels gracing the mudguard, quarter and heel counter while simultaneously stamping the profile 3-Stripes for a reminiscent detailing. Accompanied by smooth leather heel tabs and the model’s classic textured tongue, the upcoming pack revolves around a regal addition to the heel as the silhouette’s namesake is embossed into the base layer with golden metallic allure. The silhouette’s return is headlined by the same bespoke blue and red colorway that energized the market over 51 years ago – despite a slight change with the inclusion of a gum tread – while an equally vibrant “Green/Yellow” ensemble curtails the upcoming offerings.
The adidas SL 72 pack is set to release overseas on December 15th. While we await word on a stateside release, both pairs can be seen ahead in detailed imagery.
