One of the dominant models out of Boston in 2023 alongside the New Balance 550, the New Balance 2002R has shifted to a more relaxed release schedule in 2024. Ceding space to other NB models for these first two months, it would appear that they’re back for their first big release of the year, with a trio of classic colorways comprising the “Leather Pack.”
As with most of the shoes coming out of New Balance, we’re most familiar with the 2002R in some combination of suede, nubuck and mesh. As the name would indicate, the three shoes in the “Leather Pack” go organic in their composition, trading in that suede that usually marks the web-like overlays for the titular material. Each carry an aged, off-white midsole and a traditional palette, letting that change in materials stand out as the biggest novel inclusion.
More granularly, the black pair that leads things off is likely the most staid at first glance. They only stray from that nocturnal shade with grey suede accents towards the forefoot and on their tongue lace loop. If you’re looking for more pop and contrast, their red and white counterparts are the place to go.
The former matches that eggshell midsole shade in its laces, while holding onto a handful of grey for contrast in the back half. The latter heavily utilizes adjacent and complementary tones, running the gambit in their upper from pure white to metallic silver on the backcap.
No release date has been confirmed for the New Balance 2002R “Leather Pack,” but their price has- expect each shoe to retail for $150. You can find an array of images of each of the three shoes below.
