A Ma Maniére Beach Marks An Important Moment In Black History

A Ma Maniére is opening a seaside resort in Folly Beach, SC this summer, expanding its foray into the hospitality scene while introducing a new black-owned business to an area once burdened by segregation.

The history of Folly Beach, SC is riddled with discrimination. White beach owners in the nearby city of Charleston were explicit on keeping people of color out, a policy that extended to all other nearby public beaches until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Even in the years that followed, while Americans placed a man on the moon, Folly Beach was rendered unsafe and uninhabitable for black and brown individuals. You’d have been more than justified to call it a “sundown” town. Those who were brave enough to venture there at night often returned beaten and bloodied.

Given the area’s tumultuous past, the opening of A Ma Maniére Beach symbolizes a reclamation of land and experiences once denied to people of color.

A Ma Maniére founder James Whitner reflects: “We are dedicated to creating spaces where black and brown community members can embrace luxury on their own terms, and the A Ma Manière Beach concept stands as a testament to this unwavering commitment. This is more than just a destination; it embodies empowerment and inclusivity. By choosing Folly Beach, a locale with a history of exclusion, we are not only rewriting the narrative but reclaiming it.”

The three-story resort itself features premium accommodations and architecture tailored to the luxurious essence of fashion houses. Art from James Whitner’s private collection decorates the residence, including works from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kaws, Daniel Arsham, Anna Park, Pat Phillips, Julian Gaines, Enrico Riley, David Shrigley, and more. Simply put, the resort is every bit as elegant and sophisticated as A Ma Maniére’s design ethos as a whole.

Reservations haven’t opened yet, but A Ma Maniére Beach appears set to welcome its first guests this summer. Upon ribbon-cutting, it’s sure to become a hot spot for creatives, artists, fashion enthusiasts, and all those down for a peaceful seaside getaway (guessing that’s most of us). Enjoy detailed images of the resort’s interior below as anticipation builds.
