Original article posted June 24th, 2024: The New Balance 550 may have slipped from its status as NB’s premier “hype shoe,” ceding space to currently collab canvases de jour like the New Balance 1906R & New Balance 1000. However, the increased accessibility of recent drops means many more options to get in on the lifestyle model, including some genuinely inventive colorways. Case in point, the just-unveiled New Balance 550 “Denim Pack,” expressing a tough exterior look for the throwback kicks.
It’s two contrasting executions of the tough sewn fabric. On one hand, the the grey colorway sneaks some denim in the margins, embedding it inside the cut-out N logos and planting it on the tongue and collar with some quick swatches. Working in pure blue and dark navy denim throughout the profile while enhancing the overall color scheme via cerulean suede where it isn’t applied.
Perhaps paradoxically, the grey suede edition reads as the eye-catching one just in sheer contrast, its reliance on off-white & gum neutrals making the new fabric stand out just a bit more. Nonetheless, both break from the mold of traditional 550 looks and continue a series of experimental takes on the vintage-inspired shoe.
