Original article posted June 25th, 2024: The MLB All-Star game has emerged as a real occasion for Beaverton creatives, often taking the opportunity to revive some of their biggest and best baseball propositions. A centerpiece in the past few years has been the Nike Griffey Max 2, on tap for at least two big releases with a black & volt colorway and now, iconic “Freshwater.”
The new edition is largely true to the original, holding onto the defining design elements from the ’97 sequel; the ridged, textured upper is contrasted by a contrast mini Swoosh at the forefoot, the main expression of the titular teal outside of the carbon fiber heel counter and iconic Griffey logo at the heel. Of course, as a genuine performance shoe, a cleated bottom lands underfoot, painted with wavy teal hits as the spikes reach a point.
The 90s Nike revivalism we’ve seen in the past few years certainly dovetails well into this retro effort. Be it the return of Deion Sanders’ shoes, the DT Max ’96 or the comeback of multiple ACG models like the Nike Rufus, end of the century styles have seen a lot of success re-entering market, an encouraging sign for the success of the Griffey Max 2. For those holding out hope for a true retro of the line, we should note that Sanders’ offerings returned first as a cleat; Kyler Murray minted a football edition nearly a year before his lifestyle shoe earnestly debuted.
Whether this means proper Griffeys will be on shelves soon is unfortunately unclear, but we do expect the Nike Griffey Max 2 Cleat in “Freshwater” to land sometime in July, likely around the 2024 All-Star Game. Concrete retail pricing isn’t confirmed either, but we’re projecting something in the $150 range.
