Matt Varga Though they’re always adding new imprints into their collaborative canon, ASICS’ most reliable partner over the past years has been Bulgarian design Kiko Kostadinov. That’s both in terms of impact and sheer consistency, the two collaborators uniting for what feels like a new drop every other month at minimum. As we get ready for another launch of his ASICS UB-6, he’s taking things one step further with the upcoming ASICS UB-7.
While a cut-out layer at the heel, exaggerated pull tab and segmented sole stick around from the UB-6 retooling, the UB-7’s main innovation is a switch to a diamond-shaped grid of mesh underneath the leather overlays. Additionally, the concept of “Functional Utopia” is explored with vivid primary colors meant to evoke nature, placed in relief to reflective accents on either pair that allude to “metallic structures.”
As Kostadinov has done in the past with his releases, the collection spans two contrasting pairs. One wears an all-around nocturnal palette of deep jade, dark grey and jet black, with neon yellow jolting the shoe to life on hits throughout. Inverting that concept, a Knicks-adjacent pair utilizes a lively white foundation, iterated on with vibrant shades of orange, blue and sky blue that takes to the crosshatch mesh on the base layer. Importantly, this isn’t the first time Kiko Kostadinov ASICS have played into New Yorkers’ sensibilities, their GEL-Quantum Zientzia approaching the same concept.
