Things have changed since the ALD led-heyday of the New Balance 550. Now ceding pole position in the Boston brand’s catalog to styles like the New Balance 1906R and New Balance 9060, production numbers have dropped in accordance. That might be just what the retro basketball model needed though, as the 550 is circling back to the simplified looks it does best without the added pressure of being the spotlighted New Balance model. Take the women’s “Gum Pack,” available now via NewBalance.com.
Harkening to an aged aesthetic, the everlasting brown outsole touch is the uniting aspect across these two pairs. It’s not the only one though, as they both rely on a mix of off-white leather and light grey suede, enveloping the whole shoe and matching the N branding on either side. The obvious divergence comes with the accent shade of choice, one opting for “Pink Granite” at the collar and the other instead tinted with “Green Mallard.”
Though its design language may have fallen a bit out of favor, there are few models on the market able to meld chunky style and daily driver appeal as well as the New Balance 550. For that matter, there few colorways that mesh as well with that construction as these two “Gum” looks.
Both pairs in the New Balance 550 “Gum Pack” are available now, retailing at $110.
