Original article published September 12th, 2024: Another day at the office for New Balance MADE in UK. The across-the-pond sublabel continues to churn out cleaned-up aesthetics atop premium composition. The latest offering under the umbrella is the New Balance 991v2, enjoying a stellar first year on the shelves and again impressing in “After Midnight / Sepia Tint.”
The navy & and off-white combination on tap here should be recognizable for long-time fans of the Boston brand, a frequent execution that’s only surpassed by their trademark “Grey Day” outfits. Accordingly, that steely neutral is applied in a heavy dose on the base layer of this shoe, painting the underlying mesh that’s so synonymous with retro runner kicks in general. Though no concrete word from New Balance is available regarding the material choices here, expect pigskin suede and plush leathers, consistent with most/all MADE in UK releases.
Zooming out on the 991v2 model, a three-piece collection with Stone Island and the upcoming Salehe Bembury collaboration express New Balance’s heavy push for the reupholstered silhouette. Of course, either of those link-ups will be high-heat propositions and a pair like the one featured here offers a more accessible alternative if the 991v2 has captured your attention.
