Andrew Rizzo Edison Chen’s CLOT cutting ties with Nike Inc. and forming a new partnership with adidas was easily one of the biggest headlines of last year, putting an end to a fruitful relationship to focus on creating new shoes, not sneakers, under the Three Stripes umbrella. Now almost a year removed from that announcement, CLOT and adidas have followed through on their vision, debuting ambitious re-imaginations of the Superstar and Gazelle with a focus on formalwear. Next up is yet another take on the Superstar dubbed the CLOT Superstar Breathe, set to debut in the very near future.
As mentioned, the Superstar has been CLOT’s go-to silhouette of choice throughout its adidas partnership thus far. Chen debuted a new version featuring rebuilt leather upper, leather welts, and rippled sole back in February to kick off the CLOT x adidas line, and we glimpsed another iteration called the CLOT Dress Superstar in June (it’s yet to release). Looking a bit further back, CLOT also release a handful of Superstars in the 2010s while they were still working primarily with Nike.
The CLOT Superstar Breathe prioritize breathability above all else, as made obvious by its name. The sidewalls are comprised of mesh as opposed to leather, with intricately stitched stripes running along the quarter in a zig-zag pattern. Meant to embody the idea of “breathe in, breathe out,” the left shoe features “Mint” stripes while the right comes with fluorescent green branding. Moreover, the right shoe also comes with the Chinese characters for “CLOT” in place of Superstar lettering. Underfoot, CLOT brings a rippled sole similar to their aforementioned Superstar from earlier this year, albeit less chunky this time around. We also glimpsed images of an “Indigo” colorway earlier this month, although that shoe appears poised to arrive at a later date.
The CLOT Superstar Breathe will be available exclusively at select JUICE retail locations and online at juicestore.com on September 27, 2024. It remains to be seen if the shoe will also release broadly via adidas channels at a later date. The shoes retail for 1,199 HKD, which translates to about $155.
