Matt Varga Todd Snyder and New Balance are thick as thieves, maintaining a collaborative partnership for nearly a decade. As family and friends come further into focus for the Holidays, the two venerable partners are reunited, just releasing a “Parchment and Pine” pack on the New Balance 574 Legacy.
Here, Todd Snyder unveils his first stamp on the the silhouette, extending the shape of the beloved dad shoe and tacking on some additional features, including a synthetic panel on the heel. Notably, the silhouette is typically untouched when it comes to mainline releases. Almost as a rule, the New Balance 574 Legacy has been reserved for these sorts of collaborative affairs; in recent years, Stone Island, Bodega and Extra Butter have all taken to the throwback silhouette.
For his take on it, the brand’s namesake drew from walks in the Flower District and experiences in New York City during Winter more generally. The “Pine” edition likely doesn’t need much explanation from where it pulls its evergreen tonality. However, the “Parchment” takes inspiration from the paper used by streetside sellers to wrap up and dispose of trimmings during a Christmas tree sale. Long-haired suede towards the collar and on the toe-box further creates a festive atmosphere and evokes the collection’s central motif, while the off-white hues used on the sock-liner of either pair embrace the cozy side of holiday festivities.
