Howard University students have major bragging rights when it comes to their school’s Nike partnership. The Washington D.C. institution inked an unprecedented 20-year partnership with Jordan Brand in 2022 geared towards elevating the school’s athletic department, unlocking recruitment opportunities, and breaking new ground when it comes to amplifying HBCUs as a whole. Following the release of a Howard Jordan 1 Low earlier this year, students and alumni will soon be treated to a school-specific Air Force 1 under Nike’s ongoing Yardrunners series.
To the uninitiated; Nike’s Yardrunners program was created in 2020 in order to highlight the legacies of HBCUs through footwear designed by alumni. It’s not clear who’s responsible for the “Howard University” Air Force 1, but whomever it is did a fine job. Instead of utilizing the school’s red and blue palette a la the aforementioned Jordan 1 Low, the Yardrunners Air Force 1 offers a more animalistic ode to Howard’s bison mascot. The Swoosh, backtab, lining, and outsole all appear in dark brown, while the bulk of the upper cleans up in “Sail” leather. The only thing that tips off “Howard University” significance exists on the lateral side of the toe overlay, with the printed coordinates leading to the center of Howard’s campus.
The Air Force 1 Low “Howard University” is releasing on December 18th via retailers like DTLR, but no Nike SNKRS date has been announced as of this writing. See detailed images below and take advantage of the purchase links in our “Where To Buy” section below upon arrival.
