Original article published January 19th, 2025: Originally designed for speed on the track, the Air Max 90 undergoes some phases of weight reduction as Nike weaves carbon fiber into the build of the upper.

Taking off from the signature hot red hue that launched the shoe in 1990, Nike applies a familiar “Reverse Infrared” spin in which the iconic original receive a remix around the trademark color. Nike applies black on the toe-box and ankle collar, while the grey suede quarter comes in a few shades darker than the typical Neutral Grey. And while the bright red fails to be subtle, the real eye-catcher is the woven carbon fiber textile seen across the upper. It is very likely that this isn’t actual carbon fiber, though.

Nike is set to release this Air Max 90 “Infrared Carbon Fiber” soon for $140; select retailers have begun to stock them already.

2025 is shaping up to be a solid year for the 35-year old silhouette; in addition to five Air Max 90 “Camo” variations, a racing-themed design has also caught the attention of retro runner fans.
