Original article published January 23rd, 2025: While competition for “most reliable collaborator” is stiff (Bad Bunny adidas and Jordan Brand’s Travis Scott shoes come to mind), what Kiko Kostadinov and ASICS have accomplished in their years together made as strong of an argument as anyone. As it enters its 7th year in parternship with the Bulgarian designer, ASICS is leveraging the partnership for a bring-back of the ASICS GEL-DS Trainer 14.
While Kiko’s touch frequently remodels the ASICS silhouettes he touches, here the shoe pretty much sticks to what debuted back in 2009; the triangular quarter panel, sharp leather overlays and reduced height GEL midsole all strike exactly the same as the original model. The singular lace stay that dips into the collar is also intact, one of its more defying touches. If anything, the requisite pull-tabs on the tongue stand out as an addition, but they’re par for the course when it comes to any Kiko Kostadinov / ASICS output.
Though the hardware is generally stable from the OG to this reissue, Kostadinov isn’t shy about bringing his aesthetic overhaul to these four colorways. That quarter panel sits starkly contrasted from the rest of the shoe, utilizing a dense synthetic fabric as compared to the wide mesh that creates a “moire” effect at the heel and forefoot. In those breathable sections, tiger striped patterns take over, executing the two-tone palettes of each of the shoes on display. As a final touch, the center of the midsole sports a gradient look, almost akin to the Air Max Plus, undoubtedly carrying the retro appeal of models from its class.
All four colorways of the Kiko Kostadinov UB9-S ASICS GEL-DS Trainer 14 are expected to emerge via global channels soon — select overseas retailers have earmarked a February 7th release date. A retail of $140 per pair is expected.
