Matt Varga Saucony’s continued push as a face of the tech runner movement owes a lot to in-house energy that the Boston team has put forward, but as always, it takes a village. Notable collaborators like Jae Tips have helped bring the heritage running brand rise back to the top, but less flashy names are also due some credit. Most notably uniting for a pony-haired edition of the Triumph 22 running shoe, Nordstrom and Saucony are coming back together for a more conservative link-up on the Progrid Triumph 4.
At first glance, these may not register as a massive reinvention of the retro running style, and on an aesthetic level, that initial impression is right. “Sand,” cream and some “Ink” navy line-work coursing through the sole are essentially the only tones represented here. Instead, it’s the materiality of the shoe that’s the focus, pinning lifestyle-ready suede next to the open-grid mesh that brings the shoe its Y2K appeal.
Notably, Alex Dymond is behind the design here, responsible for legendary designs like the Shoe Goo Nike SB Dunk and amassing a long backlog of Nordstrom special make-ups of this type under his Studio Dymond imprint. To that end, this shoe and many of the others that line his resume are true family affairs, representing link-ups between his independent label and the retailer where his wife, Olivia Kim, serves as Vice President of Creative Projects.
