AVAVAV and founder/lead creative Beate Karlsson are motivated by an exceedingly rare thing in the fashion space: a sense of humor. For us and those in our audience, you would’ve been able to draw that conclusion with a glimpse at the brand’s “Superfinger” collection that released in November, the official kickoff of an adidas partnership only gaining momentum. Up next, we switch from the field of the five fingers to something new entirely, the AVAVAV adidas Moonrubber and Superstar Modified.
We’ll begin with the Moonrubber, carrying shades of Balenciaga’s platformed runner series with a bulbous attachment onto the sole of the Megaride. Though the mesh upper design of that silhouette remains intact, obviously the glossy appendix underfoot shoves this out of tech runner and into a genuine avant garde design, though you can spot the original hexagonal bounce units peeking through the TPU. What remains unclear is whether you can remove those synthetic bubbles to better befit casual wear — the “Superfinger” crucially included that option, but it’d be equally understandable for AVAVAV to push the envelope further in their follow-up effort.
We can confidently stamp the other half of this collection, the adidas Superstar Modified, as being permanently changed. While the upper construction remains true to what we’re familiar with, AVAVAV warpsm bends and sizes up the sole unit making for a far chunkier shell toe as a result. An all-black option ensures the runway atmosphere is felt in this capsule, while a distressed off-white and red brings a bit more sporty flair to the table.
The adidas AVAVAV collection, including the Superstar Modified and the Moonrubber, releases via CONFIRMED on May 22nd. Retail is set at $280 and $350, respectively. A litany of similarly experimental apparel pieces will also be touching down that same day.
