While the run of classic bring-backs that’ve carried headlines has been Jordan Brand’s foremost way to celebrate 40 years, the brand has been multiple in its anniversary. The “Rare Air” colorway series is very much in the mix, a semi-mashup concept that alludes to the nascent days of the sub-brand when sample processes were less exact and early pairs often showed visual errors and miscues.

After the Jordan 1 “Rare Air” pack deployed mismatched branding and the Jordan 3 “Rare Air” wore inverse Nike Air patches, the Air Jordan 4 “Rare Air” delivers with removable, interchangeable tongue patches. Additionally, hitting on something of a “blind box” atmosphere, 2% of pairs carry golden “Rare Air” branding inset into the velcro patch there.

Overall, designers have said that they hoped the “Rare Air” collection would look like something Mike could’ve laced up in his playing days. Utilizing a black suede base, faux-aged rear midsole, and accent shades seen on the totemic “Military Blue,” “Fire Red,” or “Black Cement” is a sensible way to accomplish that, all blended together on a shoe with hopes of becoming a modern classic.
