Given all the energy the brand has put behind models like the New Balance 2010 and New Balance 2000, we can’t fault anyone for losing track of the New Balance 509. First revealed towards the top of the year, the silhouette is partially a strength-on-strength addition to the catalog, adding another tech runner into the mix aimed at strengthening the company’s foothold in the $100 price tier.

Even with its cost-cognizant origins, Boston designers have still showed commitment to pinning eye-catching looks onto the fresh proposition. Look to the XLIM New Balance 509, a still pending release, for proof of that, or the two-pack at hand. Breaking from the staid metallics of the first two inline colorways to trickle out, instead the New Balance 509 echoes Aurora Borealis with iridescent overlay finishes. One of the set wears a purple-heavy gradient finish while the other capitalizes on more aquatic blue-greens, yet they’re united in their foundations, relying on jet black mesh to create an overall eye-catching profile.
