The Story Behind The Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard”

Any amateur hooper knows you do genuinely have to have some athletic prowess to dunk; even few pro hoopers have the hops and power to shatter the backboard. In a friendly match between In 1985, fresh off of a Rookie of the Year season, Michael Jordan toured Europe on the behest of Nike. During a stop in Italy, he suited up for Pallacanestro Trieste in an exhibition match and gave local fans far more than ticket price, taking down the rim support and giving a glimpse of the unreal athleticism that’d bring him legendary status in the decade to come. In 2015, Jordan Brand utilized the orange and black jerseys from that fateful afternoon for its own legendary product: the Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard.

What Makes This Release So Special

Though there was still a healthy amount of Retro releases pacing the calendar in 2015, it still wasn’t anything close to the weekly Jordan drop schedule we’re now used to. Especially after re-launching the Air Jordan 1 High Retro OG, an original-facing cut of Mike’s first signature with eyes on recapturing the glory that helped to launch this hobby, earnest AJ1 colorways were also in far shorter supply. It’s this aspect that made pairs like the Air Jordan 1 “Taxi,” rumored on and off for years, become nearly mythical entities — simply put, the Air Jordan 1 simply didn’t approach certain sections of the color wheel.

To wit, that’s also the same dynamic that helped propel the Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard” to becoming an instant classic, and one of the hottest secondary market drops of its release year. With 2025’s Jumpman 40th anniversary bringing many coveted colorways back to the fore, the orange-y edition was a natural choice for the same treatment, marking its own 10th birthday. The plush leather of that pair only bolstered the striking colorway. Ten years later, the “Sail” is a bit whiter, the “Starfish” is a tad darker, but the accomplished air of this shoe is unchanged all the same.
