Andrew Rizzo Much like its competitors, New Balance Numeric has proven you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to create a solid skate shoe. The Boston brand’s archive is chock-full of silhouettes that can be made skateable with some TLC – something we’ve seen notably through the popular New Balance Numeric 480. Next up from that realm is the New Balance Numeric 770; a skateboarding version of a deeply-archived ’90s silhouette.
Not to be confused with the M700 or R700, the Numeric 770 is a retooled version of the CXT770 cross-trainer. The CXT770 caught on with tennis players due to its stability, making it an ideal candidate for a skate-minded makeover nearly three decades later. A blog post by former sneaker designer Victor Toro reveals that New Balance considered bringing the CXT770 back in 2018, but the project was ultimately scrapped.
Visually, the Numeric 770 takes after the original CXT770 to a tee. A combination of tumbled and smooth, perforated leather aligns with the prevailing ’90s cross-trainer aesthetic, as do supportive TPU arms on both sides. A double-layered toe cap makes for extreme durability, while internal, hidden lace loops offer optional lace protection. The sneaker also comes with an “Integrated Counter Reinforcer Footframe System” for added stability, as well as molded polyurethane insoles for impact absorption. Finally, as is standard on most modern skate sneakers, internal straps ensure the tongue stays front and center.
