At this point, the Nike Air Max Plus has joined its siblings in the Air Max 1 and Air Max 90 in becoming true general release fare. Countless colorways of Sean McDowell’s design dot the shelves, elevated from a cult classic that you’d struggle to acquire to a shoe you’ll spot frequently on the feet of the casual consumer. However, the dedicated fanbase of the Tn legacy will soon have another silhouette to covet, as the 20th anniversary of the Air Max Plus VII culminates in a full-blown retro effort.
For the uninitiated, Nike didn’t leave 1998’s design on its own terms. As the Nike Air Max Plus became a consistent product line, Nike utilized its cushioning platform for ten numbered editions. Jumping further ahead, they’d eventually abandon that numbered convention with 2010’s Air Max Plus X, but the OG influenced spins like the Vapormax Plus and, in indirect fashion, the Air Max Dn. Of that original ten-piece, the Air Max Plus VII remained a cult classic for its stippled, synthetic upper design, culminating in the bring-back effort we’re now in the midst of.
In a move sure to satisfy the historians, the Air Max Plus VII “Varsity Maize” was the first of the crop to resurface, staying true to a colorway that shoppers saw back in ’05. From there, a gradient-soaked “Dusk” that carries similarities to the Air Max Plus “Fireberry” and two simplistically laid out pairs in “White/Black” and “Triple Black” herald the shoe’s return.
