Matt Varga In various showcases and brand previews, Nike signaled its intentions to bet big on the women’s market with a variety of archival retros and novel inventions. As we’ve noted, the Air Max Muse has hit that mark and more, while the Air Superfly has more closely resembled the cult curio it was before its revival than the next “it shoe.” Nonetheless, now having had the chance to get its feet underneath it, the Nike Air Superfly looks to buzzier directions to catch fire as it lets loose an upcoming “Animal Pack.”
Originally born as a racing trainer, the track tooling of the shoe makes it a suitable choice for the moment, carrying sleek overall design language and a thinned-out sole befitting throwback Y2K stylings. Much the same way that Nike has aimed the Field General or Dunk at suddenly rampant animal prints, the Superfly doesn’t reinvent the formula too much, saddling its sidewalls in cow print for one pair and cheetah print for another. The former fits its wild theme with brown anchoring down the midline and in its platform, while the latter utilizes black in those same spots.
