Matt Varga Ten years ago, it would’ve been impossible to imagine a brand like ASICS on the runway, even as the brand experienced a golden age surrounding the ASICS GEL-Lyte 3 and similar suede runner builds. Paradoxically, it’s been a trip even further into the archives that’s prompted the brand’s acceptability in fashion-forward circles, as the tech runner movement has spurred collaborations with earnest fashion labels.
One of the more freshly minted of that vertical is the ASICS x SHUSHU/TONG partnership, teeing off the join-up with the Shanghai brand by way of a lacey takeover of the ASICS GEL-Kinetic Fluent. For their follow-up, the same model remains in focus. Part of the intrigue with the inaugural edition came from the contrast between the unmissable sportiness of the parent silhouette, either for its throwback chrome build or its visible underfoot cushioning, and the womenswear company’s more delicate touch. It’s only right that the two double down on the latter to make that interplay more pronounced, now shifting the trainer into a mule by chopping out the lace unit, replacing it with an oversized bow to (literally) bridge the gap left over.
This latest SHUSHU/TONG x ASICS GEL-Kinetic Fluent link-up releases on December 5th via stateside channels. Prepare for a $220 retail price for either colorway if you’re aiming to pick up a pair.
