Nike SB Dunk Low “Som Tum” Is For Thai Food Lovers

Thai food lovers will be saying “ขอบคุณครับ” to Nike next year when they drop this tasty SB Dunk Low. With the cuisine booming in popularity across the globe, Nike has taken notice and delivered a new colorway inspired by up classic fare while nodding to the Southeast Asian country’s traditional elements.

The concept begins with an upper inspired by hand-woven baskets commonly seen throughout Thailand. A woven panel appears at the toe-box and mid-foot, while the suede overlay mimics the craft with textured suedes in light Natural Beige. A bold crimson orange sticks out via the contrast stitching and the thick laces, while a metallic blue arrives at the padded heel and heel-tab where Nike is written in Thai.

The more obvious call-outs to the Thailand appear behind the padded tongues; on the left is what appears to be rice in a bamboo steamer, while the right tongue displays a vibrant mix of papaya, herbs, and spices in a mortar and pestle to demonstrate the traditional way of making ส้มตำ (Som Tum) aka papaya salad. A lotus flower is hidden beneath the insoles, appearing on the Zoom Air unit on the heel. The insoles display typical markings seen on bags of jasmine rice.

While not confirmed, this Nike SB Dunk Low “Thai Food” could have some connection to Eric Koston, the legendary skater who was born in Bangkok and is is half Thai himself.
