As we noted at the time, the Air Jordan 3 “We Outside” pitted two disparate sides of the Nike, Inc. empire against one another, tying Mike’s iconic signature shoe to the eccentric aesthetics of the Nike ACG line. With a sample that’s just hit the ‘net, the plot thickens a bit, as an earnest Nike ACG x Air Jordan 3 comes to light.
By way of consignment and resale shop RIF LA, we see our first look at this mashup endeavor. While rather traditional touches like an off-white suede upper and black/grey elephant print keep this in the realm of typical Air Jordan 3 design, the blend of earthy tones and hi-vis yellow, pink, and orange in the trim execute the wonky ACG language that devotees have cherished for a generation. Further, a gum sole and ripstop bleeding through the eyestays and collar make for some actual outdoorsy hardware, something we eventually saw on the aforementioned “We Outside.” In a particularly creative touch, this shoe spins the Nike ACG logo with partial shading to create a new “AC3” emblem on the insoles.
Of course, with the breakout success of the Nike SB Air Jordan 4 and previous Air Jordan 1 link-ups tied to the sub-brand, osmosis between the Jumpman and specific Swoosh labels isn’t out of the question. However, when paired with news of the joint innovation incubator between Jordan, Nike, and Converse, this does signal that the borders are more permeable than ever.
To that end, while we’re not expecting the Nike ACG Air Jordan 3 pictured here to see a public release, perhaps this is a sign of things to come more generally.
