We’re (un)officially in a new high point of Nike athletes taking their talents to Bruce Kilgore’s icon. Indeed, LeBron James, Ja Morant, and Kobe Bryant are current torchbearers of the Air Force 1’s basketball heritage, with the lattermost of that list easily the most prolific over this modern span.
The Mamba estate and the Swoosh have built out the scaly Uptown as a tacit signature of the line, far more easily accessible than earnest Kobe performance kicks. Creatively, each of the AF1s we’ve seen to date (with the exception of the “Frobe” or “Soft Yellow,” distinct for its Protro titling and tooling) have leaned on monochromatic palettes, just as easily reached for as found on the shelves. That atmosphere continues with the latest pair to trickle out, a wall-to-wall neutral grey that maintains the material hallmarks of the line as well as namesake dubraes and alternating “8/24” heel stamps.
