The Bluetile x Nike SB Dunk Low carries its collaboration beyond design, weaving together themes of migration and community through one of nature’s most powerful symbols. After several unsanctioned leaks followed by an official teaser earlier this year, Bluetile is ready to take flight with its first-ever project with Nike SB.
Inspired by the Monarch butterfly, the project centers on the idea of journey, nodding to the species’ long migration in search of home. That symbolism resonates deeply with Bluetile Skateboards, who connect the story to the experiences of Mexican immigrants building lives far from where they began. At the heart of it is a personal tribute to Irving, a team member who made that very journey from Veracruz, Mexico, bringing his own energy and perspective into the community the skateshop has fostered in South Carolina.
The design follows suit with butterfly wing-inspired details, fuzzy lacing options, and hexagonal Swoosh elements pull directly from the Monarch’s anatomy, while bold orange and black tones reflect to colorful nature of the butterfly’s delicate wings. The shoe incorporates a sense of place by referencing the vivid sunsets of Columbia, South Carolina, where Bluetile has operated for over two decades.
The Bluetile x Nike SB Dunk Low “Monarch Butterfly” will release in-store on May 2nd at Bluetile in Columbia and May 3rd in Charleston, followed by an online drop on May 4th via Bluetile’s website. Retail is set at $135. Currently, SNKRS release hasn’t be made known, although it is very likely that it’ll occur in the days following.
