The New Balance 1906 Loafer has shown that tech runner hybrids can be big wins for sneaker brands, even if the “win” comes more through viral moments and earned media than everyday sightings in the wild. The ASICS GEL-1130 Mule definitely shares that front-page potential, arriving as a reworked version of one of the Japanese brand’s most ubiquitous models, a status earned through its on-trend retro build and approachable $110 price point.
For the most part, the model stays true to the GEL-1130 proper. The same midsole remains intact, while the upper bears the same mesh and leather layering that’s made the shoe a reliable staple in the first place. The only difference, albeit a major one, is the backless heel, transforming the 2008-born runner into a quirky slip-on. Controversial? Absolutely. But as sneaker history tells us time and again, that’s hardly the worst descriptor a model can have.
