Matt Varga An empire as wide as adidas’ has countless collaborators making their home inside, but AVAVAV truly has a lane to themselves. While there are other partners who toy with similar experimental and playful fare, AVAVAV has issued some of the foremost “see ’em to believe ’em” pairs to come out of the German giant in recent memory, from clown-esque Superstar Modified’s to takes on the shell toe with detachable fingers.
For the next chapter, AVAVAV and adidas engage in an exercise of contrast. While not as immediately eye-catching as the cartoony kicks that precede this silhouette, the AVAVAV Megaride still manages to subvert expectations. Any of our readers should readily recognize that Megaride is a top-line priority for the Three Stripes, looped into their World Cup celebration in heavy doses and handed to additional A-list partners like Willy Chavarria.
Yet as those shoes explore retro maximalism, the AVAVAV edition goes simplistic and rustic in its upper construction, pinning distressed, slouchy suede atop a sheer mesh foundation. Of course, the segmented propulsion unit that gives this model its name are intact below for a dose of chunked-up tech, but this is a far lower execution than we’re used to in the Megaride family. A black-on-grey colorway keeps things similarly stealthy, while a pair with red gradient uppers is for those more wanting to make a statement.
