We just don’t want to jinx anything at this point. The vibes around the New York Knicks are, in the Jalen Brunson’s words, immaculate as the squad continues on in the Eastern Conference, the Knicks having just defended The Garden against the Cleveland Cavaliers while adding to a historic nine-game playoff win streak. And Nike, realizing how big a moment we’re in for NYC and the face of Kobe Brand, hasn’t hesitated to meet the mood.
Nike’s new SoHo store was recently the site of a limited Air Force 1 “Knicks” release. Things were surprisingly tame when we pulled up, but the sneaker is now going for a handsome markup on aftermarket sites. And we can see why. The leather on these things is pure butter, and the shape, while not officially pointed out, aligns closely with that of the model’s 1990s and 2000s variants. The color blocking has all the makings of a winner: Safety Orange leather across the base, Rush Blue Swooshes, and Gum Medium Brown outsoles, a local delicacy. The Nike NYC logo is applied four times, appearing on the backtab, tongue, insoles, and lace dubrae.
