Much the same way that the 860v2 sole unit became a defining piece of tech for New Balance’s resurgence, boosting the 2002R and 1906R to industry-leading positions in the “retro runner” movement, New Balance has found an inspiring new life for another “forgotten” design. The original 2002 needed its “remodeled” offshoot precisely because audiences were reticent to shell out its high retail price, but that exact platform is now inescapable, defining the New Balance 1890, Ronnie Fieg’s New Balance 2011, and the New Balance 1954R.

The exposed ABZORB cushioning and layered composition have made the 1890 a clear attendant of the “visible tech” movement, but mesh and suede materiality push the sneaker closer to other NB inventions than a fully futuristic peer like the New Balance 2000. Leaning into that, a chilly white and grey looms as the latest colorway option to add to its library. With classic sportstyle vibes in spades, the 1890 finds some subtle intrigue for what’s a well-trod white/black edition; silvery outlines around its wavy overlays, subtle off-white in the sole, and a contrast black outsole.

The New Balance 1890 “White/Grey” is already appearing at retailers, likely indicating that a wide launch via NewBalance.com shouldn’t be too far off.
