In 2025, Free the Youth, Ghanaian streetwear label/creative agency/all-around collective made history as the first African collaborator on a Jordan Retro model. Less than a year later, they follow that friends & family Jordan 1 with a public launch of the Air Jordan 16. Long teased through handcrafted campaigns and early drops, that wide drop is finally at hand, as is the brand’s full dissection of how they brought their heritage onto the late-stage signature model.
Clearly, the standout design on the Free the Youth x Air Jordan 16 is the imprint’s take on the trademark lace shroud. Three distinct wear options are in the hands of the owner; rock yours in its “default” state to carry more silvery hues, invert the shroud to showcase a multi-color wing pattern, or drop it entirely for a sleeker, darkened look. On a narrative level, this colorway pulls from FTY’s hometown of Tema, pulling from its industrial status with the rainbow colors of shipping containers and the chrome hits of steel manufacturing.
Truly, each detail here carries some sort of weight, from the packaging, where the MJ face box changes shape to depict an eagle, to inset text reading “We succeeded in giving the people hope,” representing the final tweet from the late Winfred “Shace” Mensaha, the fourth founder of Free the Youth.
