Sneaker News Earlier this summer, we learned that the Air Jordan 12 “Obsidian” would return in 2027. Now, we’re getting our first look at the highly anticipated Retro courtesy of retailer images, giving us our clearest and most reliable look yet at next year’s release.
Originally released in 1997, the “Obsidian” remains one of the defining original colorways of Michael Jordan’s twelfth signature shoe. The 2027 edition stays faithful to that familiar formula, pairing a deep navy leather upper with contrasting white overlays and additional hits of French Blue.
The upcoming release will mark another appearance for a colorway that has spent considerable time away from shelves. After debuting alongside the Air Jordan 12 during the 1996-97 season, the “Obsidian” received its first Retro release in 2012 and hasn’t been out on the market since.
As things currently stand, the Air Jordan 12 “Obsidian” is tentatively scheduled to release on January 23rd, 2027 for $215.
The release also arrives at an interesting moment for Jordan Brand. Nike CEO Elliott Hill recently stated that the company intends to return Jordan Retros to a scarcity model, signaling fewer pairs and greater discipline around the franchise going forward. Given typical production timelines, however, those changes are more likely to affect releases planned further into 2027 and beyond than an early-January launch already well into production.
