Andrew Rizzo We’re living through a golden era for Air Jordan cleats in the NFL, anchored by a growing roster of Jordan Brand athletes like Jalen Hurts, Maxx Crosby, Puka Nacua and more, plus a steady run of on-field transformations of models made famous on hardwood. Given the movement, it’s only natural that the Jumpman would want to highlight its main NFL pioneer. Randy Moss, the first-ever Jordan Brand NFL athlete back in 1999, will soon see his name enter heavy rotation for Spring 2027. His signature Jordan Super Freak is coming back, and to take things a step further, Jordan Brand is also coming out with a Vikings-inspired take on the Air Jordan 9, shown here for the first time.
The news continues a trend of Jordan Brand celebrating its most pioneering athletes across sports, with Carmelo Anthony’s Jordan Melo 5.5 also set to return next year. Moss wore Air Jordan 9 and 13 PEs during the first chapter of his pro sneaker journey, and it was largely expected that the 2027 retro would take after his original Jordan 9 PE a la the “Melo” 12s and the like. The actual design is a touch more ambiguous, sporting a white leather upper, black mudguard, and Varsity Purple hits on the tongue and outsole. The most notable detail falls on the tongue ribbon, complete with “Twenty 3” branding in line with the original Randy Moss signature model.
Alongside the Air Jordan 9 comes a proper retro run for the Jordan Super Freak, Moss’s signature model that debuted in 2000 and took its name from his high school nickname. The shoe saw a mini retro run in 2010 under a different name, and is now set to come back under the original moniker next year. We don’t yet know whether the new version will include Randy’s original Vikings jersey number of 84, but that’s certainly a possibility.
