Jeez, when did everyone get so square? In sneakers, at least, the answer has little to do with playing it safe. As fashion’s appetite for the weird, ironic, and deliberately off-kilter continues to grow, footwear brands are taking some of their most recognizable silhouettes and giving them a decidedly unconventional makeover with squared-off toes. Nike got the ball rolling at Paris Fashion Week with a fleet of boxy Air Force 1s aka “Square Forces,” pushing the street staple into uncharted territory. Now its adidas turn.
Here we have the adidas Superstar SQ for “square,” a new execution of the Three Stripes’ iconic shell toe model with a brand new front half. The transformation is no small feat, requiring a larger mold for the sole unit, tailored paneling, and in the case of the Superstar, an entirely new shell toe construction.
Multiple Superstar SQ colorways are expected to roll out over the coming seasons, though this initial pair offers some suggestions on where adidas might look to take the tooling. The shell toe arrives with a silver coat, while the bordering parts of the leather panels take on a corroded silver finish that reads somewhat avant garde. As for the rest of the shoe, brown Aurora Coffee leather does all the heavy lifting.
The adidas Superstar SQ “Aurora Coffee” released earlier this year in Japan and is set to hit more markets in the near future. The spinoff model is a women’s exclusive retailing for $130. Check out official images below if you’re considering copping.
