And then there was one. With news of the Nike Kobe 7 “Invisibility Cloak” raging back into the mix, there’s just one original signature model left to receive the Protro treatment: the Nike Kobe 2. We’ll deliberate on when we can see that mid-2000s icon hit the shelves again, but the floodgates are now open for the 2011 classic. As anyone paying attention to the Kobe Brand playbook could tell you, all-whites have been an annual tradition on the late legend’s birthday, and the Nike Kobe 7 “Halo,” coming late next year, will check off exactly that.
Beyond just paying homage to the Mamba on his day, the flooded white “Halo” series has often been used to kickstart new Protro models: the Kobe 8 in 2023, the Kobe 9 in 2024, the Kobe 3 in 2025, and the Kobe 10 in 2026. For the colorway overall, it’s a what-you-see-is-what-you-get formula, likely carrying some silvery hits within to break away from a fully snowy arrangement.
To address the elephant in the room, the Nike Kobe 7 was a divisive proposition upon release. While it’s among the more well-received from an aesthetic standpoint, offering an ultra-aggressive overall profile through its layered, rigid midsole, the performance was a different question. The modular system underfoot was often described as clunky, and the shoe in sum had a long break-in period that some wearers described as more trouble than it was ultimately worth.
Surely addressing those concerns is top of mind for Nike as the Kobe 7 steps back into the fold. Notably, the Kobe AD, recently inducted into the modern canon, was a mixed bag when it came to traction; the updated version shows that the brand more than holds the ability to address public concern. The Kobe 7 Protro “Halo” is currently due out for Fall 2027, almost assuredly coming on August 23rd.
