Nike Is Bringing PVD Tech To The Caitlin 1

Nike Is Bringing PVD Tech To The Caitlin 1

If you’re in the camp that’s been calling for Nike to bet big on innovation once again, trust that you’ve gotten the attention of Nike Basketball. While there are some exceptions, many of the sub-brand’s recent inductees have featured new tech and centered that fact in their rollouts. The Nike LeBron 24 has KingKnit, a triple layer of Flyknit that makes it the lightest of James’ shoes to date. The Nike Ja 4 features a “JA-plate,” a midfoot shank that creeps onto the upper for an extra dose of containment. And of course the Caitlin 1, among the more hotly anticipated in recent history, shares that approach, making its “Opticast” upper a central selling point.

As official images of the Nike Caitlin 1 “Warning Code PVD” come to light, we’re learning that there’s an additional technological advance that the Swoosh has planned. That abbreviation stands for “Physical Vapor Deposition.” We aren’t material scientists by any stretch of the imagination, but this is functionally a process where metallic materials are turned gaseous, allowing for extremely thin yet still cohesive layers to be wrapped around a surface. Those who came across Nike’s “Cosmic Speed” series of football boots may have come across this before, the first utilization in Nike’s catalog that ensured on-pitch flash without cracking, previously an issue that iridescent or shimmering colorways would face once put to actual game use.

Those who have seen Caitlin Clark’s previous colorways will know that the one featured here is established; the “Warning Code” was an inversion of the launch “Racer Blue.” On top of that familiar foundation, PVD allows for a glitzy finish to the embedded C’s within the Opticast upper. Interestingly, we’ve also caught images of the same on a flip for the “Racer Blue,” resulting in a Cotton Candy style look.

The Nike Caitlin 1 “Warning Code PVD” and these PVD variations are largely expected to be entirely exclusive to Asia. However, in the event that we see a reversal of that strategy, you can catch official images below to behold what this new tech means for #22’s signature shoe. Watch our Sneaker Release Dates page for more info as it comes to light.
