Since the year 2000, NIKE, Inc. has commemorated Puerto Rico and its diaspora through a number of products, namely coqui and flag-donning iterations of the Nike Air Force 1. Ahead of New York City’s Puerto Rican Day virtual parade on June 13th, the Swoosh is honoring the island and its “Nuyorican” (New York Puerto Rican) community with a festive Nike Air Max 97.
Comining both Air Max and Boricua heritage, the forthcoming pair indulges in a “Silver Bullet” foundation, while featuring P.R.’s “bonita bandera” (beautiful flag) on the tongue’s pull tab. Elsewhere, the rich blue, red and white colors of Puerto Rico’s flag appear on the sock liner and mid-foot embroidery, the former also sporting “Aquí Me Quedo” (“Here I’ll Stay”) text, a message nodding to the island people’s resilience. Lastly, each pair of shoes comes packaged with a towel donning the phrase “Puerto Rico Te Quiero” (Puerto Rico, I Love You), a sentiment icons like Marc Anthony have crooned on record.
Enjoy campaign imagery of the Air Max 97 “Puerto Rico” here below, and expect a Nike SNKRS release on June 5th.
