atmos’ New Balance 550 “Back In Black” Is A Trip Down Memory Lane

As has become customary over the past couple of decades, atmos lent its creative vision to a handful of projects in 2023. Before the new year officially commences, the Far East Asian-institution will release its New Balance 550 “Back in Black” collaboration.

Visually, the pair is similar to other styles – both inline and collaborative – of the 1989 basketball shoe design by Steven Smith. A simple “Black/White” color scheme takes over everything from the old school sole unit to the sleek mixed-materials upper. In an announcement for the sneaker, atmos revealed that the two-tone arrangement was inspired by the mid-2010s, a time period in which street fashion was dominated by monotone finishes. To this end, atmos has covered the vintage New Balance model in hits of “Black” and “White,” delivering a pair that would’ve complemented any Black Scale, Hood By Air, Been Trill, or other “street goth” outfit worn by A$AP Rocky and others. High-quality materials elevate the NB 550 from other offerings of Smith’s design, making for a compelling option whether or not you participated in last decade’s fashion trends.

Enjoy a closer look at the project ahead, and find the shoes arriving to atmos Tokyo on December 23rd. The raffle period for the “Back in Black” 550 runs from December 16th to December 22nd.

In related sneaker news, the a New Balance 1906U “Lunar New Year” duo recently surfaced.
