adidas UltraBOOST 21

The adidas UltraBOOST 21 is a performance-running silhouette from German sportswear manufacturer adidas. First teased in August 2020, the model is set to debut in a handful of colorways on February 4th, 2021.

Long-awaited, the silhouette delivers the UltraBOOST franchise's most significant update since 2015, the year in which the running sneaker took over public consciousness. At a glance, the model maintains a familiar low-top trim and sleek shape, but further inspection reveals performance-oriented changes.

As the Three Stripes brand increases its sustainability efforts, it brings PRIMEKNIT+ to the Ultra BOOST 21's upper. The lightweight, breathable material is constructed from PRIMEBLUE, a highly-durable yarn containing at least 50% recycled Parley Ocean Plastic. (Similar construction appeared on the Prada Luna Rossa 21.) Profile 3-Stripes maintain a synthetic makeup, but promise more flexibility than previous iterations.

BOOST cushioning underfoot proffers the most notably visual change to adidas' latest sneaker. Six percent more foam has been packed into the midsole, which enables a “bouncier” ride. Underfoot, Continental rubber is re-arranged across the outsole, but promises the reliable traction that's been synonymous with the UltraBOOST line for some time. The Torsion bar, however, has been replaced with adidas LEP (Linear Energy Push) technology. Introduced on the UltraBOOST 21, the wishbone-reminiscent structure promises a 15% increase in forefoot-bending stiffness from its predecessor, which results in extra propulsion. Together, the reworked upper and sole unit create a familiar, but refreshing option for marathon training or lifestyle use.

The Ultra BOOST 21’s full life-cycle is yet to unfold, but it's already surfaced in compelling “Solar Yellow,” “Vivid Red,” “Ash Pearl” and “Halo Silver” colorways. Collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Beyoncé's IVY PARK may emerge.

Pricing for the UltraBOOST 21 hasn't been revealed, but is likely to land at $180 USD for adults, $160 USD for big kids, $90 USD for little kids and $75 USD for toddlers; special edition pairs will likely arrive at an additional $20 USD premium.
