Michael Le Jun Takahashi’s UNDERCOVER is no less than omnipresent, with many of his branching endeavors — namely his Nike collaborations and Gyakusou line-up — only tapping a fraction of the universe that exists within his head. Fueled by aggression and so potently retaining some of the ethos from his “New Warriors” collection, the designer’s forthcoming Daybreak is a wonderful set piece of tones in a package that modifies the retro kit in characteristic fashion. Sultry suede overlays next to nylon unders are fittingly enduring, with scattered Helvetica typography calling to the brand over the speckled midsole as well as the insole. What may be the most striking, however, is the monstrous protrusions that take a seat atop the entire heel wrap, gaping wide open with spiked teeth creating the illusion of something much more sinister. Another logo in the form of an underscored “U” rests here, finishing off yet another notch in the belt of the Takahashi’s releases.
