With much of last year led by the 997, it was easy to forget some of New Balance’s lesser publicized classics. However, as they got closer to the new year, they started to spread the love more evenly, giving the 990v2 a chance to return thanks to a bit of help from Aime Leon Dore. Soon after, the Boston institution stretched its hand to the 992: the inbetweener that’s nothing if not as classic as any of the adjacent models. Featuring the iconically chunky silhouette and Made in USA construction, the pair takes all of the best aspects of the brand and provides an aesthetic that’s just a bit sleeker than the 990 series without encroaching on the territory of the 993 or the 991. Grey schemes and navy-hinted neutrals have all been prepared early on, but the one that may be the creme of the crop so far is this white and silver mixture whose coloring is remiscent though with an air of high-end. Luxe pig suede overlays, leather unders, metallic mesh, and the like give off an obvious sense of quality for a fitting price tag of $175.
