adidas hasn’t been shy about sharing its plans for the forthcoming Lunar New Year, which include a “Forbidden City” edition of Derrick Rose’s first shoe, but the Three Stripes has kept hush about any commemorative “Year Of The Rat” arrangements for its Superstar model – turning 50 this year – until today. Matching its upcoming celebratory basketball counterparts, the ’70s icon dresses up in a regal black and gold outfit free of any rodent-related greys. Bottoms and shell-toes left white, “Core Black” takes over the entire leather upper, as well as laces and tongue. Trefoil-branded heel overlays are done in a metallic finish representative of wealth and riches; lateral side “SUPERSTAR” text also gets this gold treatment. Rounding out the Chinese New Year theme, Eastern-inspired graphics decorate the model’s signature profile stripes with red flora. Similar illustrations – though in larger quantities – adorn the white collars and even introduce polka-dot patterns into the mix.
No official stateside adidas.com release has been announced, but that’s likely to change by the end of the month. Until then, enjoy a look at this festive Superstar below and keep an eye out as its 50th Anniversary gets going.
UPDATE: This festive Superstar will be available on adidas.com on January 24th for $100 USD.
