Although New Balance has injected a lot of effort into its New Balance 550 over the last nine months, the brand has been gradually preparing for its 990 series’ 40th anniversary. To this end, the Boston-based institution has released special editions of the line’s first two propositions, while launching and teasing exclusive collaborations on subsequent models. The latest?: A New Balance 990v4 by Montreal’s JJJJound.
A staple in Washington D.C. and the surrounding area, as well as Philadelphia, the fourth installment in the 990v”X” series debuted in 2016 to much fanfare. Premium pig suede overlays sit atop a breathable mesh base that’s cushioned by a sportier ENCAP midsole. In signature “JJJJound” fashion, the upcoming collaborative pair indulges in an unassuming color palette – navy and black to be exact – that highlights the partners’ commitment to quality and attention to detail. While only one angle of the 990v4 has been previewed, it’s very likely that the only discernible change to NB’s five-year-old design is the branding on the sock-liner. Packaging may also get the Justin R. Saunders-treatment, but that’s yet to be seen.
Enjoy a first-look at the pair here below, and anticipate an extremely-limited release via NewBalance.com throughout fall and winter.
