Michael Le Since its founding in 2009, Nike’s N7 fund has given back to over 270 Native American and indigenous communities, awarding over $8 million in grants thus far. Their rich culture, too, has been given a greater stage on which to stand, its spotlights and platform often made of the brand’s most beloved silhouettes.
For 2022, the Nike N7 Collection may offer its boldest set of designs yet, a selection befitting the “See Me, See Us” theme. And just like the Air Force 1 that appeared at the tail end of 2021, this newly unveiled Free Crater Trail Moc proudly wears its influences on its sleeves.
In many ways, the design mimics traditional footwear, opting for a tan suede reminiscent of Moccasins. The matching, attached loops across the toe help create a handmade feel that manifests itself further by way of the “Woven Cork.” This wraps from the heel to the lateral profile, rife with strips of the sustainable material as well as blue and yellow webbing. Elsewhere, a thick, lightly patterned canvas builds out the center of the upper, while the Free sole underneath adds to the shoe’s recycled elements.
While a nod to Native American and indigenous people at its core, the shoe also seems partially inspired by the Swoosh’s “Considered” line that launched initially in 2005.
