Jovani Hernandez There’s no denying how important Aimé Leon Dore‘s Teddy Santis has been to New Balance. Over the last few years, the Queens-native has brought his love of the 1990s fashion and imagery, understanding of narrative and understated coolness to a healthy mix of popular and obscure sneakers from the Boston-based brand.
On April 5th, 2021, ALD’s frontman was appointed Creative Director of New Balance’s “Made In USA” program, exciting fans of both parties with the prospect that the decision would distill Santis’ highly-lauded touch across the brand’s mainstream footwear lineup. If the work under his popular Aimé Leon Dore brand is indicative of anything, it’s that Santis is likely to bring some color to the century-old company’s products, but Santis’ debut “Made In USA” campaign favors a heritage-inspired, grey color palette. The New Balance 990 and its v2 and v3 successors presented in the partnership’s first collection feature hairy suede accompanied by high-quality mesh and leather done in shades of tan. “Aged” components land throughout the sole units, while logo hits across the three pairs opt for classic red flair. “USA” text unsurprisingly appears on the trio, with updated messaging being stamped on the sock-liners.
