ORIGINAL STORY November 10th, 2023
Chicago’s Joe Freshgoods is closing out the year with a New Balance 990v4 duo in black-and-white makeovers.
Far less colorful and vibrant than previous projects with the Boston-based brand, the recently-teased sneakers seemingly take inspiration from the late 1990s – specifically a cover of XXL from June 1999. Ever the story-teller, JFG brings the understated, but rugged nature of the magazine’s photoshoot with Jay Z, DMX, and Ja Rule to New Balance-form. The Midwestern designer hasn’t disclosed all of the details behind his next collection as of this writing, but he’s been vocal about previous work commemorating hip-hops influence on him and culture-at-large.
While reminiscent of the readily-available “Black/White/Grey” NB 990v4 that first launched in 2016, Joe Freshgoods’ next sneaker collaboration is different. For starters, the upcoming New Balance duo feature a tonal sole unit. Furthermore, the mesh base layer appears to enjoy a different layout than standard versions of the shoe. Traditional “990” numerals on the lateral heel are also replaced with “JFG” text, further cementing Joseph Robinson in the annals of New Balance partners. Other details discernible from early and obscure looks at the pairs include patent leather panels along the tongue (at least on the mostly-black option), co-branding on the sockliners, and contrast “N” logos on the sides.
Joe Freshgoods’ New Balance 990v4 will be accompanied by an apparel collection also referencing popular apparel styles from the late ’90s.
Expect pairs to arrive via the designer’s webstore and newbalance.com before 2023 ends. The JFG x NB 990v4 should retail for $210 USD like other MADE in USA offerings.
