Sneaker brands simply can’t miss when it comes to black and colorful designs on 80s basketball shoes. The precedent set by the Air Jordan 1 “Bred” nearly forty years ago continues to inform the color blocking of retro models throughout the footwear the industry, with the New Balance 650 lending perhaps the most shining example under the Boston brand’s umbrella.
Now revisited for a women’s-exclusive delivery, the high-top version of the New Balance 550 wears “Emerald Green” hits upon a black backdrop, a slight nod to the “Pine Green” Jordan 1 that dropped back in 2020. The shoe features all-leather overlays just like typical basketball offerings from sportswear’s past, broken up only by mesh on the collar and tongue, while a white midsole rounds out the look underfoot. Obviously the shoe can’t claim the same performance basketball utility as it did back in the 80s, but this colorway comes as a fitting complement to other sporty New Balance 650 looks now picked up for lifestyle wear.
