Matt Varga Updated June 7th, 2024: Initially expected to drop exclusively in Asia, stateside retailers have begun listing the SBTG x ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 for a June 16th drop.
Among the first to chart his sort of career path, customs artist extraordinaire Mark Ong went from aftermarket alterations to sneakers created in concert with the brands themselves. The SBTG Asics GEL-Lyte III from 2021 remains one of his more notable, assisting Singapore’s Limited EDT in executing their “Monsoon Patrol” theme. Some three years later, SBTG is dipping back into that well on his own accord, bringing that motif to two pairs of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 14.
The true hallmark of those past shoes, a removable lace shroud, is again the central design aspect of this collection. However, a crosshatch nylon appearance replaces the quilted arrangement of previous editions. Materially, these opt for the blend of mesh and synthetics primarily associated with the GK14 but adding a wide swatch of silicon on the lower half. Encircling the whole shoe and functioning as a mudguard (or floodguard, thematically), the utilitarian idea is most clearly executed there, stamping militaristic spec type at the heel. Two all-encompassing cream and black colorways are on offer here, contrasting the rugged motif with palettes that lean luxe.
