Matt Varga Boston’s Bodega is a common face in the runners space, amassing dozens upon dozens of collaborations with Saucony while also periodically checking in with the likes of HOKA, New Balance and Reebok. On just about a yearly basis, ASICS has brought their product before Bodega as well, last with the ASICS GEL-NYC “After Hours” that dropped this past September. Venturing back towards the “tech runner” end of things, the two partners just unveiled their next collection, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 “Small Wins Add Up.”
Inspired by “cherishing the little victories in life,” the guiding light for this shoe is true everyday wear. Performance-wise, it’s certainly up to the task, sporting full-length GEL cushioning and the comfort-minded materials rampant throughout the ASICS catalog. Iterating on that hardware, Bodega adds mesh netting on the tongue and medial side toward the collar.
Aesthetically, they plant a colorway that’s equally vibrant and neutrals; the upper is held down in shades of white & beige, while the trim showcase brighter notes of vivid yellow, neon green & pine. Notably, this pair shares a ton of the aesthetic cues utilized on Bodega’s “Jaunt Woven” Saucony collab from earlier this year, perhaps speaking to an overriding collaborative spirit they’ll utilize throughout the rest of 2024.
On ASICS’ end, this continues the emergence of the GEL-Kayano 20 as a rising collaborative canvas. At the very top of the year, HAL Studios showcased their take on the silo before Kenzo, doublet and the ever-prolific Kiko Kostadinov brought their talents to the 2013 model. While the red-hot GEL-Kayano 14 remains in heavy rotation for out-of-house product, the 20 is undeniably gaining ground and proving again the strength of the Japanese brand’s archives.
The Bodega ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 “Small Wins Add Up” drops on September 12th, retailing for $180. Bodega will host an in-person launch at both their Los Angeles and Boston flagship locations, with an online release taking place that same day at 12PM ET.
