This New Balance 990v6 Sneaks In Glossy Patent Leather

Part of the appeal of New Balance’s “Made In” series, be it from Maine or Flimby, is that you know exactly what you’re getting in terms of materiality. Pigskin suede and premium leather is typically the combination for anything bearing their pinnacle manufacturing stamp, but the latest chapter for the New Balance 990v6 Made in USA diverges from that prompt, introducing some novel glossy touches in an everlasting black and grey colorway.

As promised, the eye-stays and front underlays come in patent leather, a familiar touch for footwear in general but one that New Balance doesn’t make a habit of picking out of the catalog. That’s especially true when it comes to the 990v6; even collaborative product has largely stuck to the runner’s base composition. The reflective touch is all the more effective on the staid colorway on tap, again leveraging “Grey Days” style neutrals through its suede mudguard, fabric liner, and foam midsole. A dose of mesh at the base layer rounds out this edition, still easily digestible in its broadest strokes but potentially portending further experimentation down the line as the 990v6 stretches out its legs.

Though the New Balance 990v6 featured here hasn’t hit NewBalance.com just yet, select retailers have already begun listing their stock. This pair commands the model’s usual $200 MSRP — check for your size using the “Where To Buy” links included below.
